For those who are not experienced with headshots, here are a few hints to help you prepare for your session:

What are Acting Headshots ?

A headshot is an 10" x 8" sized photo of an actor's face which is used to submit the actor/actress for a specific role.

The headshot can be in colour or black and white. Many agencies prefer black and white so it is a good idea to have some in your portfolio.

For best results, the clearer the face and the eyes are, you are more likely to be called to an audition.

Although termed headshots, the term includes 3/4 or full body shots used for promotional purposes.

Preparing for a Headshot Session

Here are a few tips to help you get the best from your headshot session:
  • Bring at least three changes of clothing: casual, smart casual and formal. Wear clothes that don’t distract from your face. Leave the loud patterns and stripes at home. Opt instead for very dark or very light clothing with clean necklines.
  • Jewellery, if worn, should be unobtrusive and complimentary. It should not divert attention from you. Remove any facial piercing or be prepared to have them airbrushed out unless you are requiring character shots.
  • If you have a professional hair and makeup artist to do your hair and face, keep it natural and a style that you would normally wear for auditions.
  • Do not try to hide freckles, moles, or wrinkles under heavy makeup.
Your headshot should be a complimentary portrait of you and your personality and versatility.
  • Casting directors want to know what you'll look like when you walk into the audition, not how fabulous you can be with the right clothes and makeup.
  • Update your headshot every five years or whenever you've undergone significant physical change, such as weight loss or gain.
